Our Letter to Fortune The following appeared in the July 8, 2002 issue of Fortune magazine:
Re "Why Companies Fail" (May 27):
Your "Turn employees into corporate governors" quick fix really rang true. In my business, in which we run Internet-based surveys to detect management issues, again and again we find that the employees sense management problems that management misses. We also find that middle management finds problems that are missed by senior management. One of our favorite concepts is "profound knowledge," which used to mean "the people on the shop floor know how the drill presses actually work - management doesn't." In 2002, profound knowledge means "the rank and file know when management is effective or ineffective - management doesn't."
